Entering the career development profession, a graduate student or new professional is charged with filling their toolbox as they build their competencies (Felder, 2026). Even after years of competent work, the experienced career professional needs to stay up-to-date on resources as they interact with diverse populations and reimagine their practices. “The constantly shifting world of work demands that we explore innovative strategies and tools to support our clients as they prepare for the uncertainty of seismic changes in the workplace” (Stebleton, 2019, para. 3).

Dutton (2022) promoted the use of video as a digital communication tool to onboard newbies, educate stakeholders and streamline processes. Instructional videos can be created for numerous topics. With that in mind, two NCDA directors recorded videos to share tips, resources, and instructional hints for career development professionals, especially graduate students, new members, experienced professionals, and anyone interested in learning more about NCDA online resources.

The Challenge

Every career development professional faces the challenge of finding time for acquiring and maintaining competencies. Clients’ growth depends on it, therefore it is wise to make time to assess needs, research, and identify the best options (Maietta, 2022).

Successful counselors in the 21st century must be armed with a variety of strategies, interventions and helpful "tools" in order to effectively serve our diverse clients and their diverse needs…. Staying fresh and up-to-date is not always an easy process in our field, given the plethora of new research, theories, and modalities developed every year. However, making a commitment to on-going professional development and personal growth is a crucial goal in a field as dynamic as counseling (Backes-Diaz, 2007, para. 1).

The more resources and tools you have to choose from, the more likely you will be able to achieve your professional goals and facilitate a successful outcome for your clients.

The first step to exploring new tools may be to acknowledge and commit to overcoming challenges such as:

  1. The need to make money by selling time (e.g., delivering a training) versus having unbillable hours (Chopra, 2025)
  2. Maintaining work-life balance when continuously juggling service to clients, marketing a business, completing professional development, preserving well-being, etc… (Evert, 2020)
  3. Satisfaction with the status quo and what is familiar (Economy, 2003)
  4. Overcoming the fear of making a change (Wingert, 2017)

To break down these challenges, ask yourself about the positive effects of the change and envision what your life would be like after learning and engaging with new resources (Wingert, 2017). Think about and apply the Social Cognitive Career Theory (Lent et al., 1994). When you consider self-efficacy beliefs, you contribute to performance which can determine how willing you may be to acquire new skills, experience new solutions, and engage in a world of like-minded professionals.
