The COVID-19 pandemic has magnified issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion in our country.  Virtual conversations around DEI have popped via various organizations along with discussions on delivering career development virtually.  However, there are fewer talks about career development and DEI.  Join NCDA and a panel of career development and counseling professionals in a discussion about how we can be sure to utilize a DEI-lens in our career development practices.

Presenter Information:

Mako Miller – Career Services Manager, Kauffman Scholars, Inc.  Mako Miller is a champion for diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in Kansas City. For over 14 years, Mako has made a commitment to higher education through her work for both two- and four-year colleges. Mako is the Career Services Manager for Kauffman Scholars, Inc. where she strives to remove barriers to career and social capital for students in the program. Additionally, she is pursuing her Ed.D. at the University of Kansas in higher education administration in hopes of serving in a role that promotes and supports DEI in postsecondary education.

David Julius Ford – Assistant Professor, Professional Counseling, Monmouth University David Julius Ford, Jr. holds a B.A. in Psychology and an M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, both from Wake Forest University. In May 2014, he earned his Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision at Old Dominion University. Dr. Ford is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) in North Carolina and a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Virginia and New Jersey. He is a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS). Dr. Ford taught for four years at James Madison University and is now an Assistant Professor in the Department of Professional Counseling at Monmouth University and serves and the President-elect of the New Jersey Counseling Association. Dr. Ford’s professional interests are Black Greek life; multicultural issues; college students; African American men in higher education; career counseling; addictions counseling; supervision; group work; qualitative research; the LGBTQQIA community; Intersectionality; and persons living with HIV/AIDS. He has experience as an instructor for undergraduate human services courses and has taught graduate courses in counseling skills, multicultural counseling, career counseling, testing and assessment, clinical mental health counseling, addictions counseling, practicum supervision, and group counseling. He has also taught a doctoral-level dissertation course and a doctoral-level course in grant-writing and program evaluation and advanced theories. He is one of 24 inaugural fellows of the NBCC Minority Fellowship Program. He is the 2020 recipient of the AMCD Samuel H. Johnson Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Ford is a classically trained pianist and is a proud and active member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. As an undergraduate, he had the privilege of taking a class taught by the late Dr. Maya Angelou. Dr. Ford currently lives in Ocean, New Jersey.

Cheryl Love, Ph.D. serves as a Career Counselor and Liaison to the College of Education and Integrative Studies and the Bronco Dreamers Resource Center at Cal Poly Pomona.  She is the Coordinator of the Clothes Closet Service for the Career Center and is Adjunct Faculty for the Educational Leadership Department at Cal Poly Pomona.  Cheryl has 30+ years of experience as a Counselor and Teacher in all four Higher Education systems in California (UC, CSU, Private and Community) as well as the Public School and Non-Profit sector. This breadth of experience has provided her with the knowledge and skills to work with diverse student populations to assist them with identifying their career goals. She has a Master’s Degree in Counseling with a Pupil Personnel Service Credential from California State University, Fullerton and a Doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles in Educational Psychology with an emphasis in Counseling.  She serves on the Executive Board of the Black Faculty and Staff Association as the Scholarship Chair and Membership Co-Chair at Cal Poly Pomona and serves as the Co-Chair of the National Career Development Association (NCDA) Committee on Diversity Initiatives and Cultural Inclusion, and is a member of the Higher Education Constituency Advisory Board for NCDA.  She is also a board member for the California Career Development Association (CCDA) starting in Fall 2020.   She has presented on a number of occasions at NCDA and CCDA Conferences  on Diversity and Inclusion and Social Justice Issues.  Honors include:  Cal Poly Pomona Outstanding Advisor of the Year and Diversity Champion Award in 2017; Recipient of the National Association of University Women (NAUW) 2018 March Church Terrell Award given to people who have a passion for working towards gender and racial equality and African-American mobility; and in 2019  a recipient of the Champion for Fighting Student Hunger Award offered by the Cal Poly Pomona Basic Needs Initiative.    

Emily Kikue Frank, Founder & Owner, Career Catalyst Founder, owner. Emily has more than 14 years of career counseling experience, in higher ed. and private practice. She specializes in helping quirky, creative people and those with international experience reinvent their career paths. She has a bachelor's degree in East Asian Studies from Smith College and a master's degree in counseling.  She calls Denver home but works with people from around the world. She has co-presented at NCDA on creating trans-friendly counseling spaces. 

MODERATOR: Christian D. Chan, Assistant Professor in the Department of Counseling and Educational Development at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro Christian D. Chan (he, him, his), PhD, NCC is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Counseling and Educational Development at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, President-Elect of the Association for Adult Development and Aging (AADA), and a proud Queer Person of Color. As a scholar-activist, his interests revolve around intersectionality; multiculturalism in counseling practice, supervision, and counselor education; social justice and activism; career development; critical research methodologies; and couple, family, and group modalities with socialization/communication of culture and social identities. As a recent recipient of the NCDA Merit Award, he has actively contributed to over 36 peer-reviewed publications in journals, books, and edited volumes and has conducted over 115 refereed presentations at the national, regional, and state levels.
